After your surgery you will be taken to the recovery area where you will be closely monitored by our nursing staff who will manage your care. The length of time you spend in the recovery room will vary depending on the type of surgery you had, the type of anesthesia you received, and your overall physical condition. The admissions nurse will give you an estimated discharge time so that you can arrange for transportation home if your ride is not waiting at the center.

Visitors

You are welcome to have visitors, but please no more than two at a time. Children must be supervised by an adult and not left unattended in the waiting room. If you will be staying overnight, you are welcome to have a family member or friend stay overnight with you.

If your child is the patient, know that the recovery room nurses will care for him or her until he or she has awakened. At that time, we will encourage parents to come into the recovery room.

Postoperative Instructions

Your recovery nurse will explain your postoperative instructions regarding your diet, activity restrictions, and medication.

In general, for 24 hours after your surgery:

• Have a responsible adult stay with you
• Do not sign important papers or make any critical decisions
• Do not drive or operate machinery, power tools, or appliances
• Do not drink alcoholic beverages
• Get plenty of rest

At Home

Plan to have a responsible adult stay with you the night after surgery. If you experience difficulties or complications once you return home, please contact your surgeon immediately. You may also call the staff at the High Plains Surgery Center during normal business hours at (307) 635-7070.

If you cannot reach your surgeon and your condition requires immediate attention, call 9-1-1 or have someone drive you to the nearest emergency room.

Patient Satisfaction

A High Plains Surgery Center staff member will contact you after surgery to check on your progress. You will also receive a patient satisfaction survey form that will help us to improve our care in response to your suggestions.
